A sewage or rotten-egg odor should be treated as a source-diagnosis problem, not an air-freshening problem. Possible causes include a dry plumbing trap, failed toilet seal, open drain line, blocked vent, broken sewer pipe, contaminated drain, sulfur-producing bacteria in hot water—or a natural-gas leak.
